Eventually, the four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. explained his reasons for thumbing down Golden Boy Promotions’ (GBP) supposed contract for the Abner Mares fight.
Donaire said, if GBP was truly serious about setting up the unification title bout, he would have opted for the Mares fight . But the “Filipino Flash” said, the $3-million fight deal actually lacked the fight details. There was really no proper venue,no proper date, no later than this, no later than that, it wasn't good enough,”
What really irked Donaire was a provision in the contract that gives GBP the right to re-schedule the bout up to 90 days. “A 90-day postponement? I mean, come on. I'm in this phase where if I can fight four times a year, then I'll fight four times a year,” according by Donaire.
The" flash" fights under Bob Arum’ Top Rank Inc., which refuses to co-promote the Mares fight with GBP. Arum initially offered to pay GBP an undisclosed amount for the services of Mares for an HBO fight.
Golden Boy Promotion, CEO, Richard Schaefer made a $3-million counteroffer, asking Donaire to fight Mares under Showtime. Donaire’s wife, Rachel, said a 90-day postponement could affect her husband's marketability. "That would bring down Nonito's likability down and his viewership for sitting out for nine months".
