MANILA, Philippines – The trainer of UFC welterweight king
Georges St-Pierre believes the long-time champion will retire after
fighter Brazilian legend and middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider”
Silva.Firas Zahabi, St-Pierre’s longtime trainer, was quoted by ESPN UK as saying that his fighter is willing to consider both a super-fight against Silva as well as a title defense against Johny Hendricks.
“It’s not a one-sided decision. The UFC is going to have to obviously tell us what they want to do,” said Zahabi. “But I think Georges would do either fight, to be honest with you.”
UFC president Dana White recently declared Hendricks as the No. 1 contender after he defeated former interim champion Carlos Condit.
“If he fights Hendricks, I think (GSP) could fight for longer. He could have more fights after that,” Zahabi said.
But the trainer said that if St-Pierre winds up fighting the Brazilian Silva, then he expects the Canadian superstar to hang up his gloves after that bout.
“If he fights Anderson Silva, I could really see that being his last fight,” Zahabi said. “He’ll retire after that because there won’t be a bigger fight for him to do, I think, anymore in his career.”
It doesn’t matter if St-Pierre wins or loses against “The Spider,” Zahabi said.
“Win or lose, I think he’ll probably end on that note, on Anderson Silva,” said the trainer. “Maybe that’s why it’s been pushed back a little bit.”
“But I think when it does happen, it will be the last one, because once he goes up a weight class, he’s never coming back down,” he added.
Silva has made no secret of his intention to fight St-Pierre, though the welterweight champion has not been keen on the super-fight.
White, however, has repeatedly expressed his confidence that the Silva-GSP showdown will happen.
