Top Rank- We have an agreement with Guillermo Regondeaux for Donaire fight.

Gary Hyde, the Regondeaux's manager, said, Nonito Donaire Jr. is bound to fight Guillermo Rigondeaux despite all the posturing between Top Rank and Golden Boy, the two famous promotional outfits in boxing.

Top Rank is contractually obligated to arrange the Donaire-Rigondeaux match amid reports of Golden Boy Promotions’ $3-million offer for a Donaire versus Abner Mares fight.
“It is well known that Top Rank committed a Donaire bout to HBO in April.

It is well known that Mr. Rigondeaux has a multi-bout agreement with Top Rank and cannot violate its word to Rigondeaux. Likewise, if we do not anticipate it,would violate its word to HBO.

According to reports, Donaire and Rigondeaux have already exchanged contracts for signing.
The unification title bout between the two boxers is slated on April 13.

“After April 13th, Guillermo 'the jackal" Regondeaux said, if victorious against Donaire, I will be excited and very willing  to fight Mr. Mares if the logistics can be worked out. Until then, the grandstanding of Mares and his promoter should stop,” said Hyde.

The reason why Donaire didn't take the Mares fight.

A lot of rumors coming from different corners of the boxing world specially between Top Rank and Golden Boy promotions regarding how to deal on the Donaire vs Mares fight.

Eventually, the four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. explained his reasons for thumbing down Golden Boy Promotions’ (GBP) supposed contract for the Abner Mares fight.

Donaire said, if GBP was truly serious about setting up the unification title bout, he would have opted for the Mares fight . But the “Filipino Flash” said, the $3-million fight deal actually lacked the fight details. There was really no proper venue,no proper date, no later than this, no later than that, it wasn't good enough,”

What really irked Donaire was a provision in the contract that gives GBP the right to re-schedule the bout up to 90 days. “A 90-day postponement? I mean, come on. I'm in this phase where if I can fight four times a year, then I'll fight four times a year,” according by Donaire.

The" flash"  fights under Bob Arum’ Top Rank Inc., which refuses to co-promote the Mares fight with GBP. Arum initially offered to pay GBP an undisclosed amount for the services of Mares for an HBO fight.

Golden Boy Promotion, CEO, Richard Schaefer made a $3-million counteroffer, asking Donaire to fight Mares under Showtime. Donaire’s wife, Rachel, said a 90-day postponement could affect her husband's marketability. "That would bring down Nonito's likability down and his viewership for sitting out for nine months".

Donaire is the reigning WBO, Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion. Valcarcel also expressed pride in the fact that the fourth fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao last December 8 which Marquez won by a crushing 6th round knockout was chosen “Fight of the Year” by the BWAA. The WBO crowned Marquez as WBO “Champion of the Decade” for his victory.

He said “We (the WBO) want to congratulate Nonito Donaire for this achievement, being elected as the Boxer of the Year. We are proud of Donaire because he is a great champion, one of the best now, and a good person. It’s an honor to have Donaire as our champion”.

Valcarcel also commended Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia. He said. “I want to congratulate too Robert Garcia for his Trainer of the Year Award. Robert is a good friend of mine, but also is one of the best trainers in the sport. He has a good group of fighters and a good future with them”. Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs) fought four times in 2012, starting in February with a win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. when he handily won the WBO super bantamweight title. In July, Donaire beat Jeffrey Mathebula in his first title defense in the process breakinbg IBF champion Mathebula’s jaw in two places.

The 'flash"  followed this up with a spectacular 9th round TKO of Japan’s WBC super champion Toshiaki Nishioka in October and ended the year with a smashing 3rd round knockout of four division Mexican champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce. Valcarcel said the fourth showdown between Marquez and Pacquiao didn’t let the fans down. The WBO president said “We knew this was a great fight and they didn’t let us down. Pacquiao and Marquez are two legends and in this fight they showed their talent to the world in an exciting fight.” Valcarcel added, “We are very proud of Marquez and Pacquiao, great WBO champions.”

About the matters between  Donaire vs. Mares, Arum makes it clear that Golden Boy has NOT sent a contract, rather a letter that proposed a fight for June 15th. Arum explained that they have an April 13th commitment with HBO. Arum said he offered Golden Boy a sum of money for the Mares Vs. Donaire fight, but they rejected it. Arum tells 8CN that Donaire's next fight will be scheduled for April 13th either between Vic Darchinyan or Guillermo Rigondeaux

Boxing Writers Association in America voted Nonito Donaire as " Fighter of the Year"

The rising boxing superstar has now gathered  a mass of honors for the astonishing boxing performance in 2012 when he displayed a mental prowess and superior boxing skills against four champions.

Nonito Donaire, the super bantamweight champion has been named Fighter of the Year for 2012 by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Donaire successfully defended his world title four times in 2012, the last two by stoppage, as he surged toward the top of most pound-for-pound fighter lists. It marks the fourth time in the last seven years that a boxer from the Philippines has won the BWAA's Sugar Ray Robinson "Fighter of the Year" award. Countryman Manny Pacquiao held this in 2006, 2008, and 2009.

Nonito Donaire won the WBO 122 pound title with a comfortable win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr of Puerto Rico last February. Then successfully defended the title three times beating IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa and breaking his jaw in two places before scoring a 9th round TKO win over Japan’s WBC bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka and then dropping Mexico’s four division champion Jorge  Arce three times to en route to a 3rd round knockout.

Nonito told the Manila Standard he was “deeply honored and humbled by the award” and thanked the Boxing Writers Association of America for the award which touched him at a significant moment in his career and his life.

Meanwhile Robert Garcia, Donaire's trainer has been recognized as winner of the Eddie Futch "Trainer of the Year" award. In addition to Donaire, Garcia has developed world title holders including Mikey Garcia and Brandon Rios.

The highest payday of "Nonito Donaire" just to fight "Abner Mares"

Nonito Donaire
Staging a fight between two contrasting styles is somehow a very interesting to watch specially in the world of professional boxing. Like Nonito Donaire a  very  clever fighter while Abner Mares is an assault specialist.

This maybe one of the reasons why Golden Boy Promotions has offered Nonito Donaire Jr.’s promoter Bob Arum $3 million for the right to stage the super fight pitting unbeaten Mexican champion Abner Mares against the Filipino boxing star.

The offer was made by GBP CEO Richard Schaefer to Top Rank, which promotes Donaire’s fights. Top Rank’s big boss Arum had earlier asked his rival outfit to name its price to earn the right to run the show itself.

Schaefer told Boxingscene.com that Arum was “lowballing” Mares’ manager Frank Espinoza in their negotiations for the fight, which could generate huge pay-per-view demands owing to the pulling power of two of the world’s best super bantamweights.

“I think both fighters—Abner Mares and Nonito Donaire—deserve to make the most money in this fight,” Schaefer said. “I’m willing to put up an offer, to Bob Arum, to provide the services of Donaire. I am willing to offer them $3 million.”

Donaire - just wait Abner Mares, Guillermo Regondeaux first

Staging a fight between Nonito Donaire vs Abner Mares is what the boxing enthusiasts want. Mexico vs Phillipines boxing rivalry once again awakes if this fight will happen this year. But the deal is done for Donaire vs Regondeaux super bantamweight clash which  will be staged on April 13,2013.

Therefore, Nonito will  need to pick his spots carefully. Observers believe he has  the edge in hand-speed, and certainly in power, but he has no margin for error against this type of opponent.

But still, Donaire was the  Fighter of the Year in 2012  for many reasons. He's extraordinarily gifted in his own right, and should be the athletically and physically superior fighter in the ring. He's also a more versatile boxer who has a number of different paths he could take in order to obtain a victory in the showdown.

Don't let Rigondeaux's lack of a  professional fights or pro boxing experiences fool you. He had  long trainings as a Cuban amateur sensation. He participated in more than 400 amateur fights and he's regarded as one of the best amateur boxers of all-time, with two Olympic gold medals and an array of world titles to his credit.

He will be a very difficult challenge for Donaire. Known as "The Jackal", he's a precise counter-puncher with fantastic reflexes and timing. Because of that wealth of experience, he's very calm and focused inside the ring.

Julio Ceasar Chavez Sr. picked Nonito Donaire as the next #1 pound for pound in the world

Closer to the edge of their colorful boxing career with guys like Floyd Mayweather, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao, who will step up and become the next pound for pound boxing icon? A question  that many of us have our own opinions, but what if that question was asked to a certified boxing legend?

That is exactly what happened recently when a man considered the greatest fighter ever to come out of Mexico, Chavez Sr was asked to give his thought on who will be the boxing's next P4P star. A quite tough choice for the retired legend, but he ultimately picked Donaire Jr.

Interviewed previously by ESPN Deportes, on many boxing related issues, Chavez Sr. was asked who will be the sport's next #1 P4P best. Chavez Sr. stated: "It's hard to pick one, but I definitely think Nonito Donaire has demonstrated that he is one of the best in the world. "Chavez Sr. went on to add: "I think Donaire will be the one to reign over the sport."

Last December 8, 2012,  Donaire floored Chavez’s fellow Mexican, Jorge Arce, in just three rounds. The win was only one of four in 2012 aginst Toshiaki Nishioka, Jeffrey Methabula and Welfredo  Vasquez Jr. and reigned as king in the super bantamweight division. Donaire, the reigning WBO and the RING super bantamweight champion, is currently rated as the No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. The “Filipino Flash” is set to make his ring return in April 27, 2013 against the Cuban WBA 122-pound champion Guillermo Rignodeaux .

Nonito Donaire vs Guillermo Regondeaux's fight on April

Regondeaux vs Donaire

It's been a long time when Guillermo Regodeaux (11-0-0, 8 KOs), the Cuban WBA super bantamweight belt holder called out Nonito Donaire Jr. (31-1-0, 20 KOs) the WBO super bantamweight champion for a unification bout.

Now its the time of the Filipino champion to turn the tide when he said earlier that he wanted to fight the undefeated WBC champion Abner Mares but welcomes the chances of going up against Rigondeaux.

Donaire said; At this point now, I'm like, whoever they put on that contract next to my name, that's the guy I'm fighting. I don't care who he is. I don't care if he's the best in the world, or if he's the greatest fighter of all time, or anything like that. If I see that guy's name next to mine, that's the guy I'm fighting.I'm not saying anything, I'm not doing anything. I'm just going to go out there and I'm going to win. It's pretty much as simple as that. I'm not the type to go out there and play all these stupid games and call people out and do this and do that. Apparently they just don't understand the world of boxing. And that's just what it is."

Now the deal between these two champions is almost over.  The Donaire-Rigondeaux clash will take place in either Las Vegas or New York on April 13, 2013.

Salido floored by Garcia four times

New York, New York, USA - A display of boxing skills and intelligence courtesy of Mikey Garcia. The Salido vs Garcia  featherweight fight became one sided in favor to the newly crowned WBO featherweight beltholder.

Garcia floored Salido twice in the first round after he connected with a hook to Salido's chin. Salido, 32, was down in the canvas again in Rounds 3 and 4 after getting caught by a right uppercut and a  left hook from Garcia and won the WBO featherweight title by unanimous technical decision after the eight round.
Garcia dominated the action in nearly every round before the fight was stopped due to a broken nose after an accidental Salido headbutt.

The Mexican brawler hopelessly tried to come back with his careless attack that pinned Garcia to the ropes. He would then unload big looping left hands on his foe who tried to defend those shots.
Salido couldn't sustain
Garcia's attack, who smartly got away from the ropes and brought the fight in the center of the ring. Garcia would then retaliate with fast and accurate combinations that Salido has no answer.

A shortened fight  went to the judges' scorecards 79-70, 79-69 and 79-69. It was no surprise as Garcia took all but one of the eight rounds, losing only the 7th round in two judges' cards and won the belt in his
31st fight and remained unbeaten in the process.

Mikey Garcia- the road to fame and glory is near

Sometimes the road to fame and glory is difficult to find or is not easy to pass. For Mikey Garcia, he is almost there. The gateway of a major world title is now reachable as he will square off  WBO belt holder Orlando Salido on Saturday night  from the Theater at Madison Square Garden (9:45 p.m., ET/PT, HBO). It took for him 30 professional fights to be in this open door to stardom.  Nowadays, most talented boxers  are fighting for a belt within 20 to 25 fights.  A clear  example is  Adrien Broner, who, in his 25 fights, is already on his second world title (in as many weight classes). “I’m very excited I’m finally here,” he told Maxboxing last week. “Last year, we were looking for a title opportunity, two title shots in front of me, signed, agreed on and it just wasn’t happening. Finally, everything is going well. Right now, the fight is just around the corner.”
Garcia is only 25 years old but wise beyond his years. He says of the lost opportunities, “We were really excited to be offered those title shots and then when we hear the news that it’s not happening, it is frustrating. It is a little upsetting that all the hard work, everything is going well and all of a sudden - it’s not happening. It is upsetting; I mean, I understand. Things like this happen all the time and it’s just part of the game and we gotta move forward.” Perhaps, New York  is the first place for him to win his first championship title.

Juan Manuel Marquez PRIZE is high

After a sensational 6th round knockout courtesy of Marquez against Pacquioa and the fight was recognized as 2012 fight of the year by many boxing publishers. His prize now will become double or maybe triple in his coming fight perhaps against junior welterweight champion (WBF) Zolani Marali (22 - 5, 13 KO's) of South Africa or any other opponent.

According to trainer/manager Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, a wealthy prince of Dubai has put together a written offer of 15 million dollars to see Juan Manuel Marquez will square off Zolani Marali.

But Arum and Beltran have their priorities,Beristain said. Despite the big offer for a fight in Dubai, Bob Arum of Top Rank promotion and Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotion are almost closed the edge to stage of a Marquez's next fight. The proposal was dated in March, but Nacho said it is not possible because Marquez has not yet stated training after his clash with Pacquiao. Even if the date is in April it would be tough.

"I think it is not enough time for Juan to fight because he is usually very well prepared and he knows he can't go into a fight with less preparation, so I don't thing that anything will happen on that date." He said.

Marquez not retiring, may return in April: report

Posted at 01/15/2013 8:14 PM | Updated as of 01/15/2013 8:15 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez has decided to continue his boxing career and may return to the ring as soon as April 2013, Boxing Scene reported.

Boxing Scene cited sources in Mexico who said “Dinamita” made the decision after a long vacation with his family.

Marquez is coming off the greatest victory of his career, a sixth-round knockout of his Filipino rival Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

“A good source indicates that Marquez held a recent meeting with promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, and they agreed to a ring return in April – either on April 13 or April 20,” Boxing Scene reported.

Potential opponents for Marquez include Jessie Vargas and Vyacheslav Senchenko. No location for the fight has been announced.

Pacquiao is also aiming for a ring return in April, and if the rivals are successful, they may fight for a fifth time in September.

ROACH - No tune up fight for Pacqioa on April

There are plans to bring back the Philippine boxing Pride Manny Pacquiao  this April against a less - rated opponent for his preparation of a fifth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez who knocked him down in the 6th round last December 2012, where most outlets voted their match as the " Fight of the Year."

The possible opponents in the line are Jessie Vargas ( 29, 0, 9KO's ) and Vyacheslav Senchenco ( 33, 1, 22 KO's ).

Marquez ( 55-6-1-40KO's ) and Pacquiao ( 54-5-2-38 KO's) are set to have a tune-up bout in different opponents to further hype  a potential fifth meeting this coming September.

But Pacquioa's longtime trainer Freddie Roach is not on the same wavelength with the tune up fight. He would rather want Pacquioa to rest, train, and go straight into a fifth fight against Marquez.

They are talking about a tune fight in Macau right now, with him and Marquez on the same show together in different opponents and then a rematch in September which is being negotiated now. The thing is, I don't really want a tune up fight. I would rather go straight to a fifth fight. I don't think Manny at this stage of his career  and his caliber needs a tune up fight. The thing is, he is going right back to the horse. The first thing he said to me ( after his loss to Marquez ) - we need to do it one more time," Roach told Fight Hub TV

DONAIRE FEELS GREAT ABOUT AN ADDITIONAL BLESSING

PhilBoxing.com

WBO, Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire feels great about the “good news” that his wife Rachel is expecting their first born.

Donaire and Rachel who called us to give us the news were extremely pleased even as Donaire said he would “have to work harder because there will be an extra mouth to feed.”

Boxing appeared to take a back seat as Donaire was all excited about being a father even as he said he hadn’t heard anything about his next fight.

He said "I'm happy with all the awards and victories in 2012 but to me everything was nothing in comparison to when my wife told me she is pregnant."

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Manila Standard that Donaire will enter the ring in April most probably against WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux but there is nothing definite.

For his winning the 122 pounds title in February and three successful title defenses against IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula, WBC super champion Toshiaki Nishioka and four division champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce, Donaire won a series of accolades as the “Fighter of the Year” from Ring Magazine, ESPN, Yahoo Sports and boxingscene.com.

He is also certain to be named the Philippine Sportswriters Asian “Athlete of the Year” in the annual awards in March.

Garcia will fight again in New York, USA

Garcia
October 2011, the last time Mikey Garcia fought in New York, he was known as a solid prospect and the little brother of name trainer Robert Garcia, who cornered Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios and Antonio Margarito. Robert Garcia, who held the junior lightweight title in 1998 and 1999, was no slouch as a hitter, but his little brother might be on track to surpass him. He beat Juan Carlos Martinez (TKO4) at the Madison Square Garden Theater on a card topped by Donaire.

Mikey Garcia, of Oxnard, Calif., is coming back to the East Coast on Saturday, when he will take on featherweight belt holder Orlando Salido at the MSG Theater. Salido is a hard man, of body and will, and Garcia can't have an off night and beat him.

"I love going to New York for this fight,"he said. "New York has always been a great fight town, and I had a great experience there when I fought there last year. It is a great place to fight and a great place to win my first world championship."

Salido
"Orlando Salido is the best featherweight champion in the world, and he has earned the right to be called that," he said. "He is very strong and very experienced, and this will be the toughest test of my career, but I am ready for it."

I'm inclined to agree. Salido (39-11-2, 27 KOs) is 32, but has been a pro since 1996, and so his tires are a little balder. Garcia (30-0, 26 KOs) doesn't wow you out of the box, as he's a methodical worker who takes a couple of rounds to scout his foe and look for holes. But by Round 4, he should begin to display his assault against Salido to a victory.

Mikey Garcia vs Orlando Salido updates

Salido
Garcia
MIKEY GARCIA  a native of Oxnard, Calif. and a graduate of the Ventura County Police Academy, Garcia is in final week of training camp before he will head east to "The Mecca of Boxing," Madison Square Garden, where he will challenge World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Orlando "Siri" Salido (39-11-2, 27 KOs), of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, México. The Salido vs. Garcia world title fight will headline a championship tripleheader which will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®, Saturday, January 19, at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

Garcia said, "Orlando Salido is the best featherweight champion in the world and he has earned the right to be called that. He is very strong and very experienced and this will be the toughest test of my career, but I am ready for it. "I have been waiting to fight for a world championship for awhile and I am ready for the challenge. I now have the experience and the skill to face the best fighters at featherweight and I will prove it. "I love going to New York for this fight. New York has always been a great fight town and I had a great experience there when I fought there last year. It's a great place to fight and a great place to win my first world championship. "Looking forward to a great fight and to giving the fans my best effort possible. I know that is about winning but also about giving the fans their money's worth."

Garcia (30-0, 26 KOs) will return to the ring having won 14 of his past 15 bouts by knockout. Considered as one of boxing’s top young fighter, Garcia, 24, had a career-best year in 2011, knocking out previously undefeated contender Matt Remillard in the 10th round in March to capture his NABF and NABO title belts. He followed that with four-round knockout title defense victories of Rafael Guzman and Juan Carlos Martinez in June and October, respectively. Guzman and Martinez had a combined record of 47-14-1 when they fought Garcia. Last year, he continued his winning ways, knocking out one-time world title challenger Bernabe Concepcion and former world champion Mauricio Pastrana, in the seventh and second rounds, respectively. In his last fight , November 10, Garcia knocked out former WBA featherweight champion Jonathan Barros in the eighth round. Garcia is trained by his father Eduardo Garcia and co-managed by his brother, Robert Garcia, the 2012 Trainer of the Year.

The Manny Pacquiao's Choices for Redemption

Pacquiao
Manny Pacquiao will fight again twice this year after a history-written loss against Marquez . His second fight of the year will take place in September and come against Juan Manuel Marquez. His first will be at some point towards the end of April, and will likely feature an opponent whose style is conducive to a beat down from the Filipino star. No expert counterpunchers. No ultra-athletic speedsters who have the ability to steal a decision on points.

A tune-up for a legend who desperately needs to break his two-fighting losing streak, that's all it will be – nothing more, nothing less.

All of that is etched in stone. Based on various comments made by Top Rank representatives and members of Pacquiao’s camp, we now have a general outline for what the upcoming year will look like. What we don’t know, however, is precisely who he will be facing in that April bout.

Robert Guerrero was suggested by Freddie Roach, but that appears unlikely. Brandon Rios was at one point an early favorite, but he seems to be more interested in a rematch with Mike Alvarado. Timothy Bradley supposedly already has a fight and opponent lined up for March.
Who does that leave?

Vyacheslav Senchenko and Jessie Vargas. One would serve as a good tune-up for the Filipino star.

 Vyacheslav Senche
Senchenko would come into the bout fresh off his ninth round KO over Ricky Hatton, a match he was on his way to losing before landing a well-timed body shot to send his foe straight into retirement. If what Paul Malignaggi did to him was any indication, Pacquiao definitely won't have too much trouble against the 35-year-old.

Jessie Vargas
Vargas is a different story. He would come into this thing riding a 21-fight undefeated streak and with a whole lot to prove. At 23 he would view this as a career-making fight, and bring the sort of savvy and intensity to it that a.) allowed him to sneak out a decision over Vito Gasparyan and b.) might catch Pacquiao off guard.
It goes without saying that Vargas has no knockout power to speak of and may get dropped with relative ease by the Pacquiao folks saw in rounds one through five of the Marquez fight; however, he is still too risky to be a tune-up. And since this April match-up is supposed to be a tune-up (which is also probably why Rios isn’t getting more serious consideration), Senchenko is clearly the way to go.

Overview of Broner, Banks and Opponents' Fights

On February 16, Golden Boy Promotions will most certainly have high hopes that the action packed card featuring the likes of WBC Lightweight champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner and the newly crowned NABO and WBC International Heavyweight titleholder, Johnathon Banks will produce the same type of fireworks at he Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey has seen more than its fair share of memorable evenings within the ring.

Broner
Rees
The undefeated rising star Broner (25(21)-0) will face off with former world titlist Gavin Rees (37(18)-1(1)-1), while Banks (29(19)-1(1)-1) will exchange punches as a rematch against the fighter whom he knocked out in a second round upset last November, Seth Mitchell (25(19)-1(1)-1).
Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell is a former linebacker at Michigan State University. While the heavyweight class has in recent years been more than dominated by Europeans (most notably the Klitschko brothers), it was Mitchell among others who had been perhaps touted as the next potential great American heavyweight. He turned pro in 2008 after a brief amateur career and blazed his way to an undefeated record. Then along came the night of November 17, 2012. Mitchell ran face first into Johnathon Banks, who himself had been spending his days as a trainer for Wladimir Klitschko. Seth was knocked down three times in the second round and the fight was stopped shortly thereafter. He spoke of his feelings in regard to the rematch with Banks and how the first defeat of his career sat and began to stew within him.

Seth indicated that he felt no desire to endorse the trend of calling it quits after a tough loss, especially so early in his career and at the age of 30. He stated that he had no issues when the time came to return to the gym and resume his training. "It wasn’t hard at all. I have been boxing for six years now and I have never been out of the gym for more than three weeks. I am always in shape when I get into the ring and I never underestimate my opponent. We’ve been focusing on some technical issues such as my balance. I feel that people will see a different Seth on the (February) 16th. I never considered quitting. The heavyweight division is always tough. One punch can end it. Even though I felt I won the first round, I was so very upset with my performance. Eventually, my mistakes caught up with me. All of the reaching and the lunging on my part was so foolish. I think that my technique was so bad that night that I feel that just about anyone could have beaten me if they fought correctly.

" Detroit native Johnathon Banks had some things to say as well. He seemed to be enthusiastic about the idea of a return match with the fighter whom he so easily defeated last November. "I look forward to the fight on February 16 on HBO. As always, my hat goes off to Seth Mitchell. He always shows a lot of character, which is something many fighters do not do. I know he will be looking to come back stronger than before and I’ll be ready for him." Although Banks had initially hoped that his resounding win over Mitchell would immediately lead to a major title shot, he did acknowledge the fact that Seth Mitchell was well within his rights to exercise the rematch clause of which both sides had agreed. Said Banks, "I wanted to move on to something different, but you have to go with what is in black and white. He had the rematch clause. I would’ve done the same thing if I was in his position. I knew going into the fight just who I was facing. He’s relentless and he was going for the victory. I have no resentment.

Seth Mitchell is not the first football player to turn to boxing. Still, many boxing writers and fans alike felt that the former linebacker was exposed by a tested fighter. Johnathon Banks does not agree. "I didn’t see any inexperience the way that so many others did. It doesn’t matter because I can always get caught with the right punch at the right time. He’s a big heavyweight who can punch. We know that he’s a top level guy and that he is looking to correct his mistakes. I’ll have to take a different approach as well.

" The evening’s main event will showcase a matchup between unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner of Cincinnati, Ohio and Welsh fighter Gavin "The Rock" Rees. The two boxers greeted each other well. Rees knows his task on February 16th may be the toughest of his career. "I’m looking forward to putting on a good show. Adrien’s a massively talented fighter, so I’m getting prepared for a big test." Broner has been known to never mix his words or miss an opportunity to openly boast about his abilities. Said Adrien, "Everyone knows what to expect. I’m fighting someone who usually fights at 140. Everyone comes to win and I’ll train as I always do: as if this is the biggest and last fight of my life. I’m a two time world champion at the age of 23. I don’t know much about him, but I hope he brings his "A" game. I can stand in front of a guy and not get hit. I can do it all. I can brawl and I can bang and people don’t hit me that much.

" Rees has only loss on his resume, which took place nearly five years ago. He lost via twelfth round TKO to Andriy Kotelnyk. He spoke about how the defeat affected him and even better how it caused him to stop living his hard partying lifestyle. "I am a bit of a come forward fighter. I can mix it up and do whatever it takes to win. After my first loss, I took better control of my life. I will fight anyone. I know he’s a great fighter, but I am confident in my game plan. My last two performances were the best of my career. I now live the life of a true fighter. It wasn’t always that way, but I turned it around. Adrien’s a great kid and I have watched lots of videos of him. I’m glad he gave me this chance." He further indicated that the love of life in the ring is what drives him. He jumped at the chance to face a world class talent like Broner.

" Adrien Broner recently moved up to lightweight and scored an impressive knockout win over Antonio DeMarco, who himself at the time was seen as Broner’s toughest test to date. "The Problem" handled him with ease and so naturally in the minds of many, questions arose about whether or not Broner would make another jump in weight. He indicated that the junior welterweight division is an enticing thought, but that it would have to wait for now.

"People have now seen me dominate at 130 and 135 (lbs). They want me to just automatically go up to 140.There’s still a lot of great fights for me at 135. Then I can move up to 140 and crush their dreams, too. I just fight whoever they put in front of me. I don’t pick my fights. Sometimes I don’t know who my opponent is until a few weeks out. He (Rees) has a hell of a record as a professional. I take chances because I believe in myself.

" The Cincinnati native further stressed in his own unique fashion that he will be prepared for whatever his opponent brings. Rees is not known in the United States to the same degree as Broner, but Adrien sees no advantage in this fact. "Whatever he brings, I’ll be waiting for him. My main focus is to just stay sharp and to be mentally and physically prepared for this fight. No fight is a stepping stone because any fight could be your last. Let me make this clear to everyone. I train hard. I don’t know much about Gavin Rees and that actually makes him more dangerous. It’s not arrogance. It’s the truth. Whoever gets into the ring with me will see that I put it all on the line. I want to be the best to have ever laced up the gloves.

EXPLOSIVE HBO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® DOUBLEHEADER TO HIT BOARDWALK HALL IN ATLANTIC CITY ON FEBRUARY 16

News
by: PhilBoxing.com

Adrien Broner
Gavin Rees
Atlantic City, January 10 - Boxing's brightest star and one of the sport's most eagerly anticipated rematches will both take center stage on Saturday, February 16 when HBO World Championship Boxing telecasts a doubleheader from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey featuring the WBC Lightweight World Championship fight between Two-Time and Two-Division World Champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner and former World Champion Gavin "The Rock" Rees and the second showdown between heavyweights Johnathon Banks and Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell.

This event marks Golden Boy Promotions' return to the boardwalk after a stellar card on November 17, 2012 that saw Broner capture the WBC Lightweight World Championship with an eighth round stoppage of former World Champion Antonio DeMarco and Banks scored one of the biggest upsets of the year with a second round technical knockout over previously unbeaten Mitchell.

Broner vs. Rees, a 12-round fight for Broner's WBC Lightweight World Championship will take place Saturday, February 16 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and R&R Promotions, sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City, Corona and AT&T and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. The co-main event will be a 12-round heavyweight clash between Johnathon Banks and Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell for Banks' NABO and WBC International Heavyweight titles.

Tickets priced at $200, $100, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges, go on sale on Friday, January 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET and will be available for purchase at the Boardwalk Hall box office, by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 736-1420 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

"We're pleased to bring fans another exciting night of boxing live from Atlantic City in the beginning of 2013," said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. "We are witnessing the emergence of Adrien Broner as a superstar in the sport and now he faces his next test in Gavin Rees who, with his ring experience and already proven tenacity, should give Adrien a very tough fight. With Johnathon Banks vs. Seth Mitchell we are going to see if Seth can overcome defeat and disappointment and avenge his loss to Johnathon in the same ring they fought in this past November. I'm looking forward to a great night of fights and a great show."

"Atlantic City here we come again and it will be great to have my first fight of 2013 in the same ring and place as my last fight of 2012," said Broner. "I see the outcome of this fight against Rees being similar to my last fight as I plan to knock him out in too. I am a two-time world champion now, feel great at this weight and can't wait to show the world why I am the best boxing has to offer. A new year, a new era and it starts on February 16."

"I didn't think twice about taking this fight," said Rees. "Broner is a fantastic boxer and a huge talent, but I am confident I can upset the odds on February 16th and become a Two-Division World Champion. I've got the edge when it comes to experience and under my trainer Gary Lockett, I have a new lease of life. I believe that besides DeMarco, I am the toughest opponent he's faced and I think I will cause him plenty of trouble, especially if he underestimates what I can do. This is a massive opportunity for me and it would be a dream come true to do it in the United States. I am going to be putting it all on the line to make my dream a reality."

"Here we go again. Same thing, different day," said Banks. "I'm looking forward to putting on another terrific performance for the fans in Atlantic City and those watching on HBO. I will prove again that I'm the best at what I do."

"I'm very excited and motivated for this rematch against Johnathon Banks," said Mitchell. "My training is going well. This is the first time I've been away from my family during training camp. I'm very fortunate and blessed to be back on this stage for my next fight."

"We are excited to launch an all new season of World Championship Boxing with Adrien Broner meeting Gavin Rees in a 135-pound title showdown in Atlantic City," said Kery Davis, senior vice president, programming, HBO Sports. "Along with the rematch between Johnathon Banks and Seth Mitchell as the opening bout in a high-stakes heavyweight fight, it is a night fight fans are going to enjoy."

"Caesars Atlantic City is once again pleased to work alongside Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and elated to sponsor an event-card of this magnitude," said Daniel Brockdorf, Regional Vice President of Marketing for Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City. "Last November, I had the pleasure of seeing, first hand, the level of excitement a fighter like Adrien Broner generates. This February 16th world-class event at Boardwalk Hall is proof that championship boxing is not only alive and well in Atlantic City, but thriving."

Breaking into the spotlight in a big way in 2012, Adrien "The Problem" Broner (25-0, 21 KO's) made statements in two weight classes last year en route to a 3-0 record. Kicking off 2011 with a fourth round technical knockout over previously unbeaten Eloy Perez in February, the Cincinnati native ended his championship run at 130 pounds with a fifth round stoppage over former world title contender Vicente Escobedo in July. He closed the year at Boardwalk Hall with a dominant November win over former World Champion DeMarco that earned him his second divisional world title. On February 16, the charismatic 23-year-old plans on extending his five-fight knockout streak against Rees.

One of the United Kingdom's top competitors, 32-year-old Welshman Gavin "The Rock" Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO's) is unbeaten in 11 fights since the lone loss of his career in 2008 against former World Champion Andriy Kotelnik. Now firmly established at 135 pounds after years of fighting bigger opponents, Rees, a former WBA Super Lightweight World Champion, has proven with European and British lightweight title winning victories that he's clearly in the best form of his 14-year professional career. All that's left is to bring another world title back home to Newbridge.

The owner of one of boxing's most inspirational stories, perennial contender Johnathon Banks (29-1-1, 19 KO's) captured the imagination of fight fans around the world last fall. After losing his mentor and trainer with the passing of Emanuel Steward, Banks took over for the legendary Hall of Famer as the trainer for World Champion Wladimir Klitschko (who was also trained by Steward) for his title defense win over Mariusz Wach in November. One week later, the 30-year-old from Detroit stepped into the ring himself and stunned the boxing world with a second round technical knockout win over the hot and then-undefeated contender Mitchell. On February 16, he'll look to do it again.

A thrill a second heavyweight with the power to end a bout with a single blow, Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell (25-1-1, 19 KO's) is eager for the opportunity to avenge his only professional loss against Banks. A former standout linebacker at Michigan State University, Mitchell tore through his opposition in the boxing ring for over four years, most notably beating Taurus Sykes, Timur Ibragimov and Chazz Witherspoon, all by knockout. Now he'll have to show the resilience of a champion as he attempts to even the score on February 16.

MANNY PACQUIAO and JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
             PACQUIAO and    MARQUEZ

Arum said Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions is due to meet with Marquez about the possibility of him and Pacquiao appearing in a double-header against separate foes.
Arum said the proposed double main event should serve as a teaser to a planned slambang September showdown between Pacquiao and Marquez, saying it will be held during the height of the celebration of Mexican Independence.
“This is a more important celebration among Mexicans compared to the Cinco de Mayo (festivities),” said the 81-year-old Arum.
Arum said that while the Nevada Athletic Commission prevents Pacquiao from fighting within a 120-day period, the ban would have been lifted by the third week of April. The commission also has ordered the 34-year-old Filipino icon to refrain from engaging in any contact in the first 90 days of the mandatory suspension.
It didn’t say that he can’t train,” reasoned out Arum, noting that Pacquiao can commence sparring a month before the fight.
Still, Arum maintained that negotiations haven’t started yet.
Pacquiao said he has moved on from the Marquez defeat and is actually aching to return to the ring as he begins the arduous road to redemption.
Despite the brutal knockout, Pacquiao was cleared by doctors in Las Vegas after a CT Scan immediately after the fight and upon his arrival in Manila, he underwent an MRI and was given a clean bill of health by experts at Cardinal Santos.

With an impressive amateur career begun at a very young age, Guerrero turned professional, at the age of 18, on May 22, 2001 with a four-round unanimous decision win against Alejandro Cruz. After several wins and only a single draw later, Guerrero won the WBC NABF Featherweight title against Cesar Figueroa on December 9, 2004. Defending his NABF title twice, Guerrero was seen as a rising prospect, until meeting Gamaliel Diaz in a bout televised on ShoBox, on the Showtime channel, on December 12, 2005. An aggressive Diaz upset Guerrero, winning by split decision and taking the NABF belt in the process.
Guerrero rebounded from his first loss by defeating Sandros Marcos via third-round technical knock-out, setting up a rematch against Diaz, again on Showtime. Guerrero knocked down Diaz in the first round, and eventually knocking out Diaz early in the sixth round. The win set him up to face IBF champion Eric Ekin.

Featherweight title

September 2, 2006; In his first world championship fight, Guerrero defeated Aiken by an eighth-round technical knockout in Los Angeles, California, USA. Guerrero used inside fighting, neutralizing Aiken's power, and eventually making Aiken quit on his stool after the eighth round to earn his first world title belt.

Guerrero vs. Orlando Salido

He lost the belt in his next fight in a mandatory defense to future Featherweight champion Orlando Salido in Las Vegas. Salido dominated the majority of the bout .
The IBF subsequently gave Guerrero the shot at the vacant featherweight title, which he won by ninth-round technical knockout in Copenhagen, Denmark on February 23, 2007, against Albanian boxer Spend Abazi.
Guerrero's first defense of his second title was to be against Rocky Juarez (27-3, 19 KOs); however, Juarez chose to meet WBC Super Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez in a money fight instead. Guerrero's first defense was scheduled to be against Martin Honorio (24-3-1) on November 3, 2007, and was televised on Showtime, on the undercard of the Marquez-Juarez match. Berto got back into the fight during the middle rounds, landing hard uppercuts and right hands on Guerrero, who took the punches well. Throughout the fight the two traded punches with Berto on the ropes and Guerrero smothering him, while out working him the majority of the time. By the end of the fight, both of Berto's eyes and Guerrero's right eye were closed shut. Guerrero won a unanimous decision by the scores of 116-110 on all three scorecards. In the post fight interview, Guerrero called out pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather.
