Manny Pacquiao doesn’t want to have his next fight staged in the
United States due to the taxes that are taken out. Pacquiao’s promoter
Bob Arum told Abs-cbn news.com “He [Pacquiao] says that he doesn’t want
to fight in the United States because of the high taxes and it’s hard to
not to blame him.”
He won’t make the same kind of money in pay per view from any
other country that he does in the U.S, yet he still doesn’t want to
fight their because of the taxes that are taken out. If most of the
money that Pacquiao is receiving is coming from PPV buys from the U.S.,
it’s hard to see how he’s coming out ahead by fighting in another
country because the PPV money is still going to be taxed as it always is
because it’s from the U.S fans.
As far as I can tell, the only thing that won’t be taxed is the gate
money if they have it take place in another country. The ticket money is
nothing compared to the PPV cash, so it’s not as if Pacquiao is making
out well by fighting outside of the country.
Arum doesn’t see it as a realistic option for Pacquiao to fight in
the Philippines because of the time difference. The Philippines is 16
hours ahead of California time in the U.S, which means Pacquiao would
have to fight at 1 p.m on Sunday in order for the fight to be seen live
on Saturday night in the United States.
If Pacquiao’s PPV money is still going to be getting hit by a big tax
as it leaves the country, then he’s only going to be making out with
the gate money, and I don’t know how much that’ll give him if the fight
is staged in the Philippines. Can Arum sell tickets to the Filipino
population for $200 to $1000?
